Histology and embryology stand as foundational pillars of medical education and research, providing a crucial visual and conceptual framework for understanding the human body. Histology, the study of cells, tissues and organs, underpins numerous preclinical and clinical disciplines, offering insights into the microscopic architecture that dictates organ function and informs diagnostic interpretations.
This laboratory guide serves as a valuable resource for medical and health sciences students, building upon the legacy of over 50 years of dedicated research and teaching within the Department of Histology and Embryology at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. It draws upon a rich archive of meticulously prepared histological specimens, representing a collective effort by our esteemed academic staff, dedicated research assistants, and skilled technicians. Each chapter of this revised edition guides students through the identification of key histological features, correlating micrographs with relevant organ functions and emphasizing the learning objectives for each specimen. We believe that this updated guide will empower students to develop a strong foundation in histology and embryology, preparing them for successful careers in medicine and healthcare.
Our laboratory guide seamlessly integrates with the "Virtual Microscopy" platform, offering students an enhanced learning experience. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to Prof Naciye Dilara Zeybek, Prof Pinar Duygulu Şahin and Iman R Khiavi for their invaluable efforts in the development of this system. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to our former research assistants Işık Ünal, Bengisu Kaya, Selim Zirh, Süleyman Erol, Deniz Ekin Erbaş, Kübra Simay Aydın, Sefa Burak Çam, İlker Levent Erdem and Serkan Türeli for providing the high-resolution images used in this work. The platform provides access to a comprehensive digital library of high-resolution histological images, allowing students to explore virtual slides. This integration enhances student learning by providing flexibility, increased access to resources, and a more engaging and interactive approach to studying histology, enabling students to independently study, review concepts, and prepare for laboratory sessions beyond the confines of the traditional laboratory settings. In this edition; we would like to express our profound gratitude to Prof. İlhan Kerse, the esteemed founder of our department and the first woman dean of a medical school in Türkiye for her pioneering contributions to medical education and her dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge. We also express our deep appreciation to our former professors, Prof. Ülken Örs, Prof. Aysel Şeftalioğlu, Prof. Esin Aşan, Prof. Ayşe Nur Çakar, Prof. Alparslan Özyazıcı, Prof. Attila Dağdeviren, Asst. Prof. Necmi Zağyapan, Prof. Fevziye Figen Kaymaz, Prof. A. C. Sinan Yürüker, Prof. Yeşim Uğur and our esteemed alumni, Ayşegül Nazikoğlu, Ayşegül Süzer, Rümeysa Hekimoğlu, Işık Ünal, Bengisu Kaya, Selim Zirh, Süleyman Erol, Deniz Ekin Erbaş, Kübra Simay Aydın Akkurt, İlker Levent Erdem and Serkan Türeli for their invaluable contributions to the department's legacy and their unwavering support of medical education.
